Valentin Adrian

Johann Valentin Adrian (born September 17, 1793 in Klingenberg am Main near Aschaffenburg, † June 18, 1864 in Gießen ) was a German writer, neophilologist and librarian.

Life

Johann Valentin grew up in the town of Klingenberg am Main, which at the time of his birth belonged to the Electoral Mainz and from 1814 to the Kingdom of Bavaria. After initially private instruction by the royal Bavarian civil servant Hensler - together with his son Philipp Ignaz Hensler (1795–1861) - he attended the Latin school in Miltenberg from 1806 to 1807 and the grammar school in Aschaffenburg from 1807 to 1810 . In 1811 he moved to the Charles University in Aschaffenburg and attended lectures a. a. Johann Michael Engel, 1755–1813 (philosophy), Johann Josef Ignaz von Hoffmann (physics and mathematics), Karl Joseph Hieronymus Windischmann (history) and Joseph Merkel, 1788–1866 (philology). In 1813/14 he took part in the wars of liberation against France and then continued his philosophical studies until 1816 at the University of Würzburg . After a short stay in Switzerland, he took a position as a teacher at the Hoffmann Educational Institute in Rödelheim in 1817/18 and stayed in Italy and Lausanne in 1819 . In March 1822, he met the writer Karl Viktor von Bonstetten and the historian Jean-Charles-Léonard Simonde de Sismondi in Switzerland .

From 1820 to 1823 he was the educator of the children of the Württemberg Foreign Minister Count Wintzingerode in Stuttgart , Kassel , Eichsfeld (Thuringia) and France and then traveled from Paris to England and Holland.

On July 19, 1823, he was appointed associate professor of modern languages ​​and literature at the University of Giessen , and on October 19, 1824, he was appointed full professor in Giessen, and taught from 1823 to 1825 as a pedagogue teacher. On February 10, 1825, he was appointed the first university librarian. As such, he was commissioned to reorganize the library in 1825 and was also responsible for reorganizing it. He also founded the university's collection of antique coins, for which he acquired items in trade (including Anton Promber, Vienna 1840) and at auctions. At the beginning of 1823 there was contact with Goethe in Weimar, who showed interest in winning Adrian as an assistant in the editing of the edition of his complete works ( final edition ). He was in lively correspondence with the writer and librarian Friedrich von Matthisson . Matthiesson visited him in June 1826 in Giessen. In 1827 Adrian spent several months in England again.
