Johann Wilhelm Petersen (Major General)

Johann Wilhelm Petersen (born April 28, 1814 in Pillau , † December 3, 1865 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and chief of the general staff of the II Army Corps .

Life

The son of the government building councilor Petersen and his wife Frederike, née Alexander, attended high school in Gdansk . He then joined the 5th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a fusilier on August 5, 1831 and was promoted to secondary lieutenant by mid-February 1834 . For further training, he completed the General War School in 1837/40 and worked as a mathematics teacher in the division school of the 2nd division from mid-October 1841 to the end of April 1842 . This was followed by his command as adjutant of the 1st division . Petersen rose to become on November 16, 1847Prime Lieutenant and was assigned to the General Staff on June 6, 1851 . Promoted to captain on November 20, 1851, he was first transferred to the General Staff and on June 18, 1853 to the General Staff of the 2nd Division. There he became major on October 30, 1855 , and on July 25, 1857, he joined the General Staff of the 15th Division . At the beginning of November 1858 Petersen returned to the General Staff. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 31, 1859 and assigned to the Department of Personal Affairs of the War Department on July 9, 1859 . On October 3, 1859 with the Order of the Red Eagle III. Awarded a ribbon in the class, he was released from his command on November 13, 1859 and transferred to the IV Army Corps as Chief of the General Staff on July 1, 1860 . Then he was brought to the General Staff on May 28, 1861 as head of department and promoted to colonel on October 18, 1861 . At the same time, Petersen was active from February 6, 1862 as a member of the study commission of the War Academy. Since December 19, 1863 he was Chief of the General Staff under General of the Infantry Hans Wilhelm von Schack . On May 17, 1864, he joined the II Army Corps as Chief of the General Staff. On September 24, 1864 he was awarded the Order of St. Anna II. Class and on June 8, 1865 with the Order of the Crown, II. Class. He was promoted to major general on June 18, 1865 and died unexpectedly and unmarried on December 3, 1865 in Berlin.

Petersen was buried on December 7, 1865 in the Berlin garrison cemetery.
