Johann von Koch
Johann von Koch (born September 4, 1850 in Ebmeth , Eger district ; † March 12, 1915 in Karlsruhe ) was a German architect and university professor in Prague and Riga.
Life
Koch enrolled at the Polytechnic Institute in Prague for engineering in the winter semester of 1867/68 . In 1867 he became active in the (technical) Corps Frankonia Prague . After switching to architecture studies , Alois von Brinz persuaded him to continue studying at the Technical University of Munich and the Munich Art Academy . In 1870 he was reciprocated in Brinz's mother corps Suevia Munich . In 1872 he went to the University of Vienna . In Vienna he did his military service in the Joint Army . In 1873 he started his professional activity in Prague. In 1875 he became an assistant for architecture at the German Technical University in Prague . He held lectures and in 1883 took over the professorship for building construction .
In 1884 he followed the call of the Riga Polytechnic . There he worked as a lecturer and architect. Many young architects learned from him and a number of university professors emerged from his school. Revered by his students, he was a faithful advisor to them in all difficulties. In 1893/94 he sat on the commission entrusted by the Ministry of Public Enlightenment in Saint Petersburg with the reorganization of the Technical University in Riga. After the university was Russified , he was one of the few professors who were allowed to continue teaching in German. He was repeatedly rector of Riga's Technical University and repeatedly he was dean of its architecture department, which he headed until his retirement around 1910. He retired in the west of the German Empire .
