Johann von Trarbach

Johann von Trarbach (* around 1530 ; † November 15, 1586 ) was a German sculptor . Trarbach mainly worked on grave monuments.

Life

Johann von Trarbach was born around 1530 as the son of the Trarbach stone carver Clas Murer. His maternal grandfather was the Trarbach land clerk Jost von Koppenstein . He probably began his apprenticeship as a stone sculptor at the age of 14. with Dietrich Schro in Mainz . After that he worked in Simmern , presumably with Master Hans from Trier. According to some sources, Trarbach also stayed in Heidelberg during his training .

In 1557 Trarbach received from Friedrich III. a certificate of employment from the Palatinate because he had already worked on many works for this. In 1563 he married Gertrud von Castelhun (1539–1586). The couple had six children together.

In 1564 Trarbach was appointed mayor of Simmern. He held the office until his death. Trarbach probably died on November 15, 1586 as a result of an illness.
