Philibert of Baden
Margrave Philibert von Baden (born January 22, 1536 in Baden-Baden ; † October 3, 1569 in Moncontour ) was regent of the margraviate of Baden-Baden from 1554 to 1569 .
Life
Philibert was the son of Margrave Bernhard III. von Baden and Franziska von Luxemburg .
Philibert spent part of his youth at the court of Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria in Munich . During this time Ulrich Langenmantel vom Sparren († 1570) was his court master . He had previously been a member of the guardianship government for Philibert as a councilor and moved with him from Baden-Baden to Munich. Wilhelm, his future father-in-law , was known for his strict Catholic view and brought the Jesuits to Bavaria . Margrave Philibert was a supporter of the Protestants and was not deterred by his father-in-law. In 1555 he took part in the Treaty of the Peace of Augsburg . When he wanted to come to the aid of the Huguenots in France with 1,500 men in 1565 , Emperor Maximilian II warned him not to do so. He submitted and served the emperor in Hungary in 1566 against Sultan Suleiman I.
In 1569 he even fought on the side of Charles IX. of France , the son-in-law of Emperor Maximilian II, against the Huguenots . Philibert fell on October 3, 1569 in the victorious battle of Moncontour against the Huguenots. According to his friend Heinrich von Stein, he left the battle alive and was then imprisoned and murdered by the Huguenots in a castle on the Spanish border. He left behind the 10-year-old Philipp, who later became Margrave Philipp II , his sister Jakobe von Baden , who was one year older, and two other sisters. All of the siblings were brought from Bavaria to Munich by his uncle Albrecht V and raised there.
The Protestant Margrave Philibert von Baden was very tolerant in matters of faith and gave his subjects religious freedom , but married the Catholic Mechthild von Bayern .
