Moncontour is a French village with 986 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Châtellerault and the canton of Loudun (until 2015: canton of Moncontour ). The inhabitants are called Moncontourois .

geography

Moncontour is located about 38 kilometers northwest of Poitiers on the Dive . Moncontour is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Arçay in the north, Mouterre-Silly in the northeast, Martaizé in the east and northeast, Saint-Clair in the east, Saint-Jean-de-Sauves in the east and southeast, La Grimaudière in the south and southeast, La Grimaudière in the South-west, Marnes in the south, Assais-les-Jumeaux in the south and south-west, Airvault in the south-west, Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes in the west and Brie in the north-west.

history

In 1569, the battle of Moncontour took place here between the Catholic troops of France and the Huguenots, which ended in the defeat of the Huguenots.
