Vouneuil-sur-Vienne is a French commune with a population of 2,198 (as at 1st January 2017) in the department of Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the arrondissement of Châtellerault and the canton of Chauvigny (until 2015: canton of Vouneuil-sur-Vienne ) and the communal association Communauté d'agglomération du Pays Châtelleraudais . The inhabitants are called Vouneuillois .
geography
Vouneuil-sur-Vienne is located on the Vienne River , about 21 kilometers northeast of Poitiers . The Clain forms the north-western boundary of the municipality . Vouneuil-sur-Vienne is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Cenon-sur-Vienne in the north, Availles-en-Châtellerault in the north and north-east, Monthoiron in the east, Bonneuil-Matours in the south, Saint-Cyr in the west and Beaumont and Naintré in the north-west.
The Le Pinail nature reserve is located in the municipality.
history
Between Vouneuil and the small town of Moussais was probably the battlefield on which Charles Martell and Abd ar-Rahman fought the Battle of Tours and Poitiers in October 732 .
