shipping

The section of the river between the estuary and the town of Pas-de-Jeu (28 kilometers) is canalized and part of the Canal de la Dive , which continues on the Thouet and continues to the Loire estuary. Originally planned as a connection between Loire and Charente , the existing part was put into operation in 1834, further expansion was stopped. 9 locks were built on the dive that corresponded to the Becquey ship standard (32 × 5.20 meters). The canal was mainly used by tow barges , which mostly delivered local products for onward transport to the Loire. With the expansion of the railway, the volume of freight fell more and more, and shipping on the canal was completely stopped in 1957.
