Johannes Blasius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Blasius or in German: Hans Bläsi (* around 1490 in Graubünden ; † July 18, 1550 in Chur ) was a Swiss Protestant pastor and reformer in Malans , Chur and other places in Graubünden. Together with Johannes Comander and Philipp Gallicius , he wrote the first Bündner Catechism in 1537 , a text for the Evangelical Reformed Church in Graubünden.

Life

Blasius' origin is not exactly known; it is believed that it could have come from the Münstertal or from Plurs near Chiavenna . Therefore, his name is only recorded in Latin and German and not in Romansh. He must have studied because it is said that he had a good knowledge of the ancient languages Hebrew , Greek and Latin .

He worked as a reformed pastor, first in Malans from 1526 to 1530, then from 1530 to 1550 at the Regulakirche in Chur, the second city church. After Johannes Comander, he is considered to be the most important reformer of Churs and Graubünden. He took part in the religious discussions in Ilanz in 1526 and in Susch in 1537 , which led to the Ilanz Articles , which broke the supremacy of the Catholic Church and the bishop and promoted the spread of the Reformation. Together with Johannes Comander and Jakob Salzmann, he wrote the first Bündner Catechism in 1537. Because of his opposition to pay alliances and his reformatory zeal, he was often attacked. He played a leading role in founding the Latin school in Chur in 1539. He was sent on a journey on behalf of the city of Chur and the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod . Blasius was also in correspondence with the Zurich reformer Heinrich Bullinger , who played an important role in the Reformation in Graubünden, for example in 1545 and 1546.

Blasius died of the plague in Chur in 1550, which was rampant in the city at that time.
