Johannes Choinan
Johannes Choinan ( Lower Sorbian Jan Chojnan ; born August 24, 1616 in Petershain , † 1664 in Lübbenau ) was a Sorbian linguist and Protestant pastor. He wrote the oldest surviving Lower Sorbian grammar and is a co-founder of the written Sorbian language .
In the middle of the 17th century, Choinan worked as a Protestant pastor at the village church of Zerkwitz . Both Sorbian and German members belonged to the community. On the basis of the Cottbus dialect, Choinan developed a Lower Sorbian grammar, which he completed in 1650, but which remained unprinted. Choinan first worked with the means of language comparison .
A dedication in a baptismal bowl from 1650, which is in the village church of Zerkwitz, commemorates him. In today Lübbenau belonging Zerkwitz also a street named after him as John Choinan Street.
