Zerkwitz , in Lower Sorbian Cerkwica , is a district of the city of Lübbenau / Spreewald in the north of the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in southern Brandenburg .

Zerkwitz is located in Niederlausitz north of the Niederlausitzer Landücken nature park and on the western edge of the Spreewald .
To the north of Zerkwitz lies the district of Krimnitz and further to the north the city of Lübben , which is already in the district of Dahme-Spreewald . Zerkwitz borders Lübbenau in the east. In the south follow the districts of Klein Klessow , Eisdorf and Groß Beuchow with Klein Beuchow . To the west are the districts of Klein Radden and Hindenberg, and further to the west are the neighboring districts of Alteno and Willmersdorf-Stöbritz .

Local history
Zerkwitz was first mentioned as Czyrkewicz in a sales deed from 1315 . In this document, Bodo the elder of Ilenburg Ritter Christian, known as Lange, sold the rule of Lübbenau . The place name denotes a place in which there is a church Cerkwja . In 1423 the place was mentioned as Cerkowicz and in 1541 as Cerckwitz . The name of the Lower Sorbian place was mentioned in 1761 as Zerkwiza and in 1843 as Cerkwica . A related place name is Serkowitz , a district of Radebeul in Saxony .
As a result of the Congress of Vienna , Zerkwitz came with the entire Lower Lusatia to the Kingdom of Prussia and belonged to the district of Calau . On January 1, 1926, the place Kleeden was incorporated. With the Brandenburg district reform in 1950, Zerkwitz left the district of Calau, which was converted into the district of Senftenberg, and was incorporated into the district of Lübben (Spreewald) . In 1952 the places came to the newly founded district of Calau . On January 1, 1978, Zerkwitz was incorporated into Lübbenau as a district.
Zerkwitz belongs to the Lower Lusatia church district .

The Zerkwitz village church and the school are among the architectural monuments of the city of Lübbenau .
Economy and Infrastructure
Zerkwitz is located northwest of the Spreewald motorway triangle , where the Federal Motorway 15 merges into the Federal Motorway 13 running west of the town . The local economy is characterized by smaller craft and commercial enterprises. Zerkwitz has also established itself as an important tourist location within the Lübbenau urban area through the nearby Spreewald. Many pensions and hotels as well as guest houses are located in Zerkwitz.
Personalities
In the middle of the 17th century, the Lower Sorbian linguist Johannes Choinan worked as a pastor in Zerkwitz.
