Johannes Diethart

Johannes Diethart (actually: Johannes Maria Diethart or Johannes M. Diethart ; born October 7, 1942 in Knittelfeld / Styria ) is an Austrian Byzantinist , writer and publisher .

Live and act

Growing up in Zeltweg in Styria, he also attended elementary and secondary school there, as well as secondary school and advanced high school in the Lower Austrian cities of Unterwaltersdorf and Horn . He passed the Matura in 1964.

From 1964 to 1971 he studied Classical Philology and Byzantine Studies as a major at the University of Vienna until he was awarded his doctorate . Retired in 2005, he continues to dedicate himself to literary work as editor, lecturer and author in addition to scientific work in the field of Greek papyrology and Byzantine studies.

Johannes Diethart has a son from his second marriage and, after a long stay in Vienna and Krems, has been living with his third wife in Wösendorf, a cadastral community of Weißenkirchen in the Wachau, since 2004 .

Scientific work (Byzantine studies, papyrology)

Johannes Diethart has presented numerous scientific publications. The focus of his academic work is on Greek lexicography and realism .

He was the project manager of the “Lexicon of Latin loanwords in the Greek-language documentary texts of Egypt with consideration of Coptic sources” and has worked for the “ Lexicon on Byzantine Graecity, especially of the 9th-12th centuries, ” since 1982 . Century "of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

In addition, from 1980 to 2001 he was a research assistant in the papyrus collection of the Austrian National Library and from 2002 to 2005 in the department “The Old Book”. In addition, he was also an editor at “Biblos”, the Austrian trade journal, for several years. National Library and “ Tyche ”, the specialist journal for papyrology and epigraphy .

Editor, publisher, author (Belletristisk)

Since 1980 Johannes Diethart has published numerous glosses and articles in literary magazines and anthologies, and as a journalist and freelance press photographer, articles in German and Austrian newspapers and magazines as well as on the radio.

The main focus of his literary work, however, is that of an editor and publisher . Since 1989 he has been the director of the “Österreichisches Literaturforum” publishing house, with over 130 book publications to date (mainly fiction). He was also the founder and editor-in-chief of the literary magazine of the same name, the Austrian Literature Forum, with literature from Austria and Germany as well as translations of foreign-language articles from other countries.

Only since 2000 has he published several of his own (short) volumes of prose , including in particular aphorisms and minimalist- bizarre short thrillers, a farce and a society satire .

Johannes Diethart is a member of the PEN Club and the Austrian Writers' Association .
