Johannes Füllenbach

Johannes Füllenbach SVD (born February 15, 1935 in Wied , Neuwied district (Westerwald) Rhineland-Palatinate ) is an internationally renowned Steyler missionary , author and Catholic theologian .

Training and commitment

After graduating from elementary school, Füllenbach trained as a gardener. He did his high school education at the Missionshaus St. Josef in Geilenkirchen and in 1958 obtained his university entrance qualification at the high school St. Xaver in Bad Driburg . In 1958 he entered the clerical noviciate of the Steyler missionaries in Sankt Augustin . He studied philosophy and theology at the St. Augustin Missionary Seminary near Bonn , where he was ordained a priest on October 17, 1964 . At the Pontificia Università Gregoriana the Jesuits he obtained the Licentiatein theology. In 1972 he visited Mother Teresa and her sisters in Calcutta, India for six months to get to know their work and way of life. For seven years Füllenbach gave courses in philosophy, sociology and theology at the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay , Philippines . He completed his doctorate at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC in 1977. His dissertation Ecclesiastical office and the primacy of Rome: an evaluation of recent theological discussion of First Clement was published in 1980. Füllenbach also gave lectures at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago , at the Regional Seminary in Davao , Philippines, and at the Catholic Theological Union in Melbourne , Australia. During his twelve-year tenure as director of the international renewal courses of his order in Nemi near Rome , Füllenbach began to give lectures on liberation theology and the Kingdom of God ecclesiology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1985 . From 1997 to 2006 he was consultor of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity in Rome. Until 2005 he lectured at the Gregoriana and Beda College in Rome.

In addition, Füllenbach is a regular lecturer in numerous renewal courses of various orders and various pastoral institutes worldwide, such as B. the East Asian Pastoral Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University in Manila and the North American College in Rome. As a retreat and workshop leader, he became known and appreciated in the local Catholic churches in Asia, North America and Africa, but also in Ireland and, since moving to the St. Augustine Missionary Seminary near Bonn (2005), now also in Germany. Since 1995 Füllenbach has been teaching ecclesiology at the Philosophical-Theological University SVD St. Augustin in Sankt Augustin and holding special lectures on the kingdom of God.

Many of his books have been translated from English into various languages. B. Throw fire into Arabic (2007) and Proclaiming His Kingdom. Meditations for Personal Reflection in Bengali. On October 12, 2014, Father Füllenbach celebrated his golden jubilee as a priest in the church of the mission seminary in Sankt Augustin together with nine other classmates. He currently lives in the Sankt Augustin-Bonn seminary, from where he holds workshops and lectures.
