Johannes Hertel (Indologist)
Johannes Hertel (born March 13, 1872 in Zwickau , † October 27, 1955 in Leipzig ) was a German Indologist .
Hertel wrote numerous essays and books on Indian topics. His research focus was Indian narrative literature and the Vedas . Above all, he is known for his scholarly study of the history of Panchatantra .
Hertel held the chair of Indology at the University of Leipzig from 1919 to 1937 as a full professor . There he taught Asian and Indo-European languages such as Sanskrit , Vedic , New Indian and Old Iranian and translated numerous texts from these into German. He also edited the series Indo-Iranian sources and research .
Hertel was a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and the Royal Asiatic Society in London .
A large legacy of Hertel's correspondence is in the Leipzig University Archives and in the manuscript department of the Leipzig University Library .
