The fairy tales of world literature

The fairy tales of world literature is a German-language fairy tale series founded by Friedrich von der Leyen at Diederichs Verlag in Jena , with fairy tales and occasionally other narrative genres from (almost) all over the world with over 100 volumes. Between 1912 and 1940, Friedrich von der Leyen and Paul Zaunert published 40 volumes alone, some with the sub-title Die Märchen der Völker or other sub-series titles such as German Fairy Tale Treasure or Fairy Tales of the Orient . It was later continued at other publishing locations ( Düsseldorf and others). The series appeared partly in loose succession and with various interruptions until 2003, more recently it has been edited by Hans-Jörg Uther , among others .

Between 1912 and 1940 40 volumes were published (in Jena), some with the sub-title “The Fairy Tales of the Nations” or other sub-series titles such as “German Fairy Tale Treasure” or “Fairy Tales of the Orient” . The equipment of the volumes initially consisted of either cardboard volumes with colored cover papers designed by FH Ehmke or more expensive half-leather and full-leather volumes . From 1927 onwards, the thread-stitched half-canvas variant, which had shaped the appearance of the series for decades, was introduced, with rich gold embossing on the back, colored spine label, head color cut, glued-on cover label (later integrated in the book cover) and book covers with colored cover paper. At the beginning, these included glued-in frontispieces (mostly images from the cultural environment of the respective region), as well as numerous illustrations and decorative initials. All 40 volumes of the pre-war edition appeared uniformly only in this binding variant, as Ulf Diederichs was able to demonstrate in the "marginalia". In the other forms of binding only parts of the original series.

Paul Zaunert resigned as co-editor in 1927 because he turned to other tasks. The Second World War brought an interruption in the series, so that it was only continued again in 1952. At first, the existing fund was used and only from issue 44 of the MdW onwards were new topics developed again. The first editions published after the Second World War, the revised Chinese and Indian fairy tales, were initially kept in a pure linen edition, but from their second edition onwards they were offered again in half-linen format. After von der Leyen's death in 1966, the series was supervised by the Salzburg Romanist Felix Karlinger (1920–2000) and the Munich Nordic artist Kurt Schier . The narrative researcher Hans-Jörg Uther has been the new editor since 1989.

Various volumes in the series were created by eminent scholars and are among the classics of German ethnology. Some individual volumes have been revised by various editors and later appeared under more contemporary titles. Several independent volumes are available from some geographical regions and literatures. By the time you were hired in 2003, the series had risen to a total of 182 published volumes - if you subtract the newly edited subsequent editions, 165 “real”, different fairy tale volumes remain. In 2003 the now no longer independent Diederichs-Verlag stopped the appearance of the traditional series that had existed for 91 years. The count of the series up to 1996 is based on the basis that Ulf Diederichs introduced in the "Marginalien".
