The Bopp Foundation was a foundation established in 1866 in honor of the linguist Franz Bopp , which annually awarded a sponsorship prize to scholars who “worked in the field of Sanskrit philology and comparative linguistic research, especially within the Indo-European group of people “Were active. With prize money of initially 700 thalers, the sponsorship award was twice as high as that of the Boeckh Foundation for Philology.

history

On the 50th anniversary of the publication of Bopp's work “About the Conjugation System of the Sanskrit Language”, a committee gave him 7,750 thalers on May 16, 1866 to establish a foundation. On July 21, 1866, the statute was established with the consent of Franz Bopp and the Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Through additional donations, the foundation's capital rose to 7,945 thalers by this day. In 1867 there was still no award, “ since the foundation's effectiveness increases on the day of confirmation, July 21, 1866, and the interest accrued from then until the end of 1866 did not amount to full installments: 1867 could not yet Granting will take place and the first installment will therefore come into use on May 16, 1868. “The first prize was awarded to Ernst Siecke in 1868 at the request of Franz Bopp, who had already died at the time, and who supported him with the corrections in his final years. Just one year later, the additional rate of 150 thalers planned in accordance with Section 5 was achieved, primarily through foreign support. In 1875 there was a currency reform and the academy from then on awarded 1,350 marks. In 1877 the prize money could be increased again. In the annual report it says: “ The annual income of the foundation experienced a considerable increase in the past year through the purchase of a 5% mortgage at 36,000 marks and from then on amounts to 1851 marks annually, adding 900 marks to the mortgage interest % Consols and of 300 marks in 3 1/2% Prussian premium bond. Thus, 1,800 marks a year are initially available. “In 1880 the mortgage was canceled and the prize money was again reduced to 1,350 marks. Due to the inflation of 1923, the foundation, like the Humboldt Foundation , for example , lost its capital.

Statute

The statute was drafted in 12 paragraphs on July 21, 1866 in Berlin. It regulates the issues of awarding the sponsorship prize (§§ 1, 9, 10, 11), administration of assets (§§ 2, 3, 4, 5) and the foundation commission (§§ 6, 7, 8). The following summary provides an overview:

§ 1: The interest income is awarded annually on May 16: 1. to support young scholars who have already completed their studies at the university. 2. for scientific achievements or to support scientific endeavors. Both only for the areas of Indo-European and Sanskrit philology. If the prize is awarded for a printed work, it must have appeared within the last three years.

§ 2: The Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin takes over the administration of the foundation and represents it externally.

§ 3: The Foundation's assets are administered by the Academy and are used solely for the intended purpose.

§ 4: The appointed commission inspects the bills every year and also directs its activities towards increasing the foundation's assets.

§ 5: The interest income used last year is initially 300 thalers. If this amount cannot be reached, the income of the previous year rounded down to 10 thalers will form the amount to be used. Should the capital generate more than 300 thalers in interest, the excess will only be used from 150 thalers in interest. Then the commission decides whether to use it as a second prize money, as a prize money increase to 450 thalers or to leave the additional interest in the capital. The commission needs the approval of the "philosophical-historical class" and the academy for this. If you do not agree, the interest will be left in the capital.

§ 6: The philosophical-historical class elects a commission of the Bopp Foundation every 4 years from 5 members, 3 of which are full members of the phil.-hist. Must be class. The two other members do not have to be members of the academy, but must be "scientific men and live in Berlin". Retired members can be re-elected.

§ 7: In the event of a committee member leaving early, the phil.-hist. Class a new member for the remaining period.

§ 8: One month after the election the first committee meeting takes place, in which the chairman, his deputy and the secretary are determined. Resolutions are decided by a majority of votes. At least three members must be present for this. In the event of a tie, the chairman decides.

§ 9: Franz Bopp has the disposition of the use of the income in accordance with the statute and signs the notification to the person concerned. Should he be disabled or after his death, the academy takes his place.

§ 10: Proposals can be submitted until February 1st of the respective award year.

§ 11: In a public meeting, the commission announces the award and the assets of the foundation in a short report.

§ 12: A change of the statute requires 2/3 approval of the commission, the phil.-histor. Class and the entire academy.
