Eugen Hultzsch
Eugen Hultzsch (born March 29, 1857 in Dresden , † January 16, 1927 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Indologist .
Life
The son of the Kommerzienrat , Chamber of Commerce president and politician Theodor Hultzsch studied oriental languages, comparative linguistics and Sanskrit . He graduated from the University of Leipzig in 1879 with a dissertation on the work of Vasantaraja Sakuna, a book that deals with the omina caused by animals . In 1878/79 he did military service as a one-year volunteer in the Saxon Infantry Regiment No. 106 in Leipzig (1881 reserve lieutenant). In 1882 he completed his habilitation at the University of Vienna(published under the title "The Baudhayadharma sastra" in 1884) and worked there from 1882 to 1886 as a private lecturer in oriental languages. In 1886 he took up the post of " Epigraphist to the Government of Madras ", at the same time he was a Fellow of the University of Madras .
In 1903 he followed a call to Richard Pischel's professorship for Sanskrit and comparative linguistics at the University of Halle . Hultzsch was secretary of the Deutsch-Morgenländische Gesellschaft (DMG), member of numerous academies and scientific societies and was awarded the Red Eagle Order, 4th class. Released from official obligations in 1925, the heart patient saw the printing of his edition of the Ashoka inscriptions in the Corpus Inscriptionum Indicarum series in 1926 . Almost all of Hultzsch's works were re-published as reprints in the last third of the 20th century .
