Johannes Limberg (* around 1650 in Rhoden ; † October 23 or 24, 1714 in Eisenach ) was a German clergyman and author of travel literature . His work, published in 1709, Eisenach , living and floating in 1708, is probably the oldest travel guide for the Thuringian city ​​of Eisenach.

Little is known about Johannes Limberg's childhood and youth. He was born around 1650 in Rhoden, today's Diemelstadt, in the county of Waldeck , nothing is known about his origins. Between 1667 and 1672 he studied first at the Dominican School in Marburg , later in Erfurt . After a stay in Italy in 1672, he studied in Vienna from 1673 to 1675 . He then worked in countries such as Italy, Spain , Portugal , France and England in various professions, including as a soldier , teacher and clergyman. In 1684 Limberg became president of the Minorite monastery in Bruck an der Mur . In 1689 he converted to Protestantism in Leipzig and then worked as a pastor . After another conversion, he lived for some time in a Franciscan order in Cologne . After he was in Eisenach for the first time in 1705, he converted again to Protestantism in 1707 and became the city's orphanage inspector . Limberg died on October 23 or 24, 1714 and was buried on October 26, 1714.

His first work was published in 1690 under the title Memorable travel description through Teutschland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Engeland, France and Switzerland etc. in Leipzig. In it Limberg combined the description of his travels with autobiographical elements. The book was marked by strong German patriotism and contained numerous art-historical notes. His second work, The Eisenach Living and Floating in 1708 , was first published in Stralsund in 1709 under the pseudonym Johanne von Bergenelsen , and in 1712 it was also published in Eisenach. The work is considered to be the oldest travel guide for the city of Eisenach.
