Johannes Matthias Joseph Leunis (born June 2, 1802 in Mahlerten ; † April 30, 1873 in Hildesheim ) was a Hildesheim clergyman , teacher and botanist . He was the co-founder of the Roemer Museum Hildesheim (today Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum Hildesheim ). Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Leunis ".

Life

Johannes Leunis was enrolled in the lowest class (infima) of the Josephinum grammar school in the autumn of 1815 at the age of 13 . After completing the “ grammatical ” and “ rhetorical ” classes, he devoted himself to studying philosophy from October 1820 and from October 1822 to theology . A year later he was accepted into the "Seminarium episcopale".

He began teaching in 1824 at the Josephinum as a professor and class teacher in the lowest grammatical class. In the first year he taught natural history . The year 1826 was marked by the final examination at the seminary (February) and the ordination in Paderborn . After the reorganization of the Josephinum in 1830, Leunis became a subject teacher for history , geography and natural history. On June 27, 1844, he was elected cathedral vicar .

Johannes Matthias Joseph Leunis died on April 30, 1873 of complications from a stroke.
