Johannes Polyander a Kerckhoven

Johannes Polyander a Kerckhoven also: Johan Polyander van den Kerchoven, Kerkhoven ; (Born March 28, 1568 in Metz ; † February 4, 1646 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of Johannes Polyander and Christina van Houten came from a respected Ghent family. His parents found a brief refuge in Metz. His father became pastor of the Walloon community in Emden in 1571, where he received his first training. He later attended the Latin school in Bremen under Christoph Pezel and enrolled on June 18, 1586 to study theological sciences at the University of Heidelberg . Here were Georg Sohnius (1551-1589) and Daniel Tossanus (1541-1602) his teachers. After four years he went to the University of Geneva , where he attended the lectures of Théodore de Bèze and Antoine de la Faye (1540-1615).

After he had worked as a preacher in Leiden in 1591, he was given a pastor's position in Dordrecht in 1592 . There he taught at the general school and he became the overseer of the schools there. In addition, he was given an extraordinary professorship in logic and ethics. In this task he developed his pastoral and administrative skills in the theological struggles of his time. So he took part in the Walloon Synod and laid the foundations of the Walloon seminary in Leiden (1605-1606), which was founded by Daniel Colonius the Elder as the first leader. Although he did not share the views of Jacobus Arminius , he retained his own position against the radical formulations of his opponents.

He was particularly fierce against the efforts of the Dutch government to determine what people should believe. Therefore, he also said that the church should convey the true faith without consulting the government. This commitment to church politics may have induced the curators of the University of Leiden to appoint him full professor of theology in 1611. He began this task on October 7, 1611 with the speech De theologiae dignitate et praestantia , in which he stated that he wanted to bring peace to the political and religious divisions. Polyander appeared as a mediator.

As such, he was chairman of Dutch synods 23 times and rector of the Alma Mater eight times, in 1613, 1617, 1618, 1627, 1628, 1635, 1640 and 1646 . During the Dortmund synod period he received the academic degrees of licentiate and doctor of theology. After his death, his son Johannes had an epitaph built in St. Peter's Church in Leiden .

Polyander was married twice. His first marriage was on September 19, 1592 with Judith Nuyts († 1630). His second marriage was on May 3, 1631 with Catharina Carelsd. a.
