Live and act

In his hometown, Johannes Prüfer completed the community school and then the secondary school. He then trained as a teacher in Grimma . After taking his high school diploma privately and doing his voluntary military service, Johannes Prüfer studied pedagogy and philosophy a. a. with Georg Witkowski , Emil Jungmann , Karl von Bahder and Karl Lamprecht . In 1909 he completed his studies with a doctorate. The topic of his dissertation was: The educational efforts of Friedrich Froebel in the years 1836 to 1842 . 1909/1910 he taught at the Free School Community of Wickersdorf , then at a secondary school in Dresden . Meanwhile married, Johannes Prüfer took over a lectureship at the newly founded University for Women in Leipzig in the summer of 1911, which was founded by Henriette Goldschmidt in the same year . There he taught a. a. Education and child psychology . A few years later he was appointed administrative director of the women's college. In addition, he headed the Institute for Education , the Archive for Education Issues and played a key role in the development and expansion of an education museum.

In 1917 Johannes Prüfer founded the German Society for the Promotion of Home Education in Leipzig , which published the magazine Eltern und Kind , which was highly regarded at the time . He also published the series Deutsche Elternbücherei , published by Teubner Verlag , which provided parents with new educational knowledge in a generally understandable manner , without technical jargon. In addition to Fröbel's pedagogy, it was particularly important to him to further develop the impulses from Henriette Goldschmidt's pedagogy.

In 1933 Johannes Prüfer moved to Bad Blankenburg . There he was interested in the Froebel Museum , whose holdings he cataloged and archived and into which he took over the holdings of the Froebel Museum in Eisenach , created by Eleonore Heerwart . In the mid-1930s, the board of directors of the German Froebel Association commissioned the highly respected Froebel researcher to identify the "Aryan" descent of Louise Froebel b. Levin, Froebel's second wife. The similarity of her maiden name Levin to the common name Levi in Jewish families had led to rumors that Louise Froebel might be of Jewish origin. In a questionable report, Prüfer tried to refute this claim.

Until his death, Johannes Prüfer had dealt with the biographical and editorial classification of Friedrich Froebel's achievements:

Tester's rank within Froebel research results from his source-critical access to literature and handwritten papers of Froebel. With Prüfer, Fröbel's source-critical interpretation begins, the portrayal of Fröbel's life and work, Fröbel's pedagogy on the basis of authentic material, documents and letters, begins biographical research ... Above all, the facsimile printing of the mother and co-songs by Prüfer remains to be merited .
