Johannes Praetorius (called Praetorius Zetlingensis to distinguish it from other bearers of the same name; real name Hans Schultze ; born October 22, 1630 in Zethlingen / Altmark ; † October 25, 1680 in Leipzig ) was a German writer , polyhistor and compiler .

Life

Praetorius attended school in Salzwedel , later the grammar school in Halle (Saale) and then matriculated at the University of Leipzig , where he studied natural sciences and obtained his master's degree in 1653 . Fascinated by the learned university life, he stayed in the Paulinum until his death and researched the library's treasures, which had largely been uncovered until then.

Although he occasionally held lectures, he spent most of his time busy writing, primarily as a compiler of fairy tales and curious legends . In total, he published more than 50 books. For posterity, he was especially unforgettable because of his collection of Rübezahl legends.

The Elbschwanenorden he was under the name Prophulidor on.
