John Rosenthal , when Bishop John Baptist Rosenthal (* 17th March 1903 in Oberveischede ; † 22. May 1975 ibid), was German Pallottiner - Father and first bishop of the diocese of Queenstown in Queenstown , South Africa .

Life

Rosenthal was born to the couple Louise, née Albus, and Hermann Rosenthal. He grew up near Olpe. Due to the close proximity to the new Pallottine Novice House in Olpe, Rosenthal decided in 1923 to join the Pallottine community. He studied at the Pallottine College Vallendar and Limburg theology . He was ordained a priest in Limburg in 1929. In 1930 the community leaders sent him to the Queenstown Independent Mission area in the Eastern Cape Province. There belief in ghosts, the influence of magicians, polygamy and poor social conditions were widespread among the black natives. It was in this environment that Rosenthal began his missionary work. He was later called to serve the missionary work of the white people of Queenstown. After he was first appointed Prefect of the independent Queenstown Mission Area in 1937 , Bishop Francis Hennemann of Cape Town consecrated him as Bishop of the now Apostolic Vicariate of Queenstown in 1948 . The area became an independent diocese in 1951 and Rosenthal became the first diocesan bishop. Many new churches were built in his time. In addition, he was more than 20 years in the leadership team of the South African Bishops' Conference, for which he also took part in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . In 1972 Rosenthal renounced the leadership of the diocese for health reasons. He spent the last years of his life in Olpe, where he died on May 22, 1975 after a long illness. He is buried next to Franz Wärme at the parish church of St. Cyriakus in Rhode .
