Johannes Schmid (born October 23, 1973 in Vilsbiburg ) is a German film director , theater director , opera director and screenwriter .

Life

Schmid studied theater and film studies, German, art history and musicology in Erlangen and Munich. After completing his studies, he directed his first short films from 1996 , as well as over 45 spoken and musical theater pieces a. a. at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel , at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein , the Dortmund Opera, the Konstanz Theater , the Salzburg Festival, the Teatro alla Scala, the Bonn Opera, the Malmö City Theater, the Landshut Kammerspiele, the Sankt Gallen Theater, the Mannheim Nationaltheater and on the Schauburg in Munich. In 2000, together with Philipp Budweg , he founded the film production company “simple and poignant”, from which in 2011 “ Favorite Film GmbH ” emerged. For the production from the depths of space by Gil Mehmert Schmid was at the Bavarian Film Award in 2004 with the price of the collecting society for rights of use of cinematographic works excellent (VGF) for best young producer.

In 2006/2007 Schmid, who has received several awards for his short films, shot with Stupid Mütze! his first full-length feature film as a director. The film received numerous awards at national and international festivals. His second feature film followed in 2010, the German-Polish production Winter Daughter , which was released in October 2011 and was awarded the German Film Prize in 2012 in the “Best Children's Film” category.

In the fall of 2014, shooting began on his third film, the love drama Agnes based on the novel by Peter Stamm . The film celebrated its world premiere at the International Film Festival in Palm Springs and was released in German cinemas on June 2, 2016.
