Life

Stüttgen grew up in Lank-Latum and Süchteln and initially studied theology from 1964 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster with Joseph Ratzinger . From 1966 to 1971 he studied with Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , who made him a master student in 1971 . In 1967 Stüttgen was involved in founding the German Student Party. In 1971, together with Joseph Beuys, he founded the Organization for Direct Democracy through Referendum . Between 1971 and 1980 he worked as an art teacher at the Grillo-Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen , where he led a working group at the Free International University (FIU) / Fluxus Zone West .

Subsequently, from 1980 to 1986, he was managing director of the Free International University (FIU) and head of the former Beuys studio, "Room 3", at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In September 2004 Brooks University in Oxford awarded him an “Honorary Fellowship” for his work on social sculpture . The idea of social sculpture was implemented by Johannes Stüttgen, for example with Kinderstern eV , which has been campaigning for children's rights since 1989. Stüttgen formulates the intention of the children's star as follows: “Just as real art can not be a mere glossing over and decoration of the prevailing grievances, which incidentally affect the children worst, the children's star is not some charitable idea that just wants to iron out everything that is in the Names of the world's ruling systems of misery. "

Stüttgen is linked to the events surrounding the destroyed Fettecke by Joseph Beuys and the distillation of its remains. Stüttgen has been holding ring talks in the Berger Church in Düsseldorf since 2011 .

Johannes Stüttgen is a great-nephew of the Prussian / Belgian sculptor Christian Stüttgen . His younger brothers are the visual artist Stephan Stüttgen (* 1947) and the puppeteer Christoph Stüttgen.
