John Anthony Cramer
John Anthony Cramer (* 1793 in Mitlödi , Switzerland ; † August 24, 1848 in Scarborough , mostly John Antony Cramer ) was a British scholar of antiquity from Switzerland .
John Anthony Cramer attended Westminster School in London before entering Christ Church College , Oxford in 1811 . He studied Classical Studies and Mathematics with distinction . In 1814 he received his BA , in 1817 he graduated as an MA. In 1830 he received the degree of Bachelor of Divinity , and a year later the doctorate to Doctor of Divinity . In 1822 he was appointed priest of Binsey, Oxfordshire , a position he held until 1845. In 1842 he succeededThomas Arnold was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford University and taught on this professorship until his death. He was also dean of Carlisle Cathedral in 1844 , but continued to live as a principal at St Peter's College , Oxford.
John Anthony Cramer has left an extensive scientific work and has stood out particularly through his collections of the Anecdota Graeca . Under this title, he published previously unknown Greek texts based on manuscripts from the academic libraries in Paris and Oxford in a total of eight volumes .
He considered the Tractatus coislinianus (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France , Coislinianus 120) to be the work of a commentator on Aristotle 's theory of comedy.
