John Browne, 1st Marquess of Sligo KP (* 11. June 1756 , † 2. June 1809 in Lisbon ), was an Irish -British r peer and politician .

Life

He was the elder son of Peter Browne, 2nd Earl of Altamont , and Elizabeth Kelly. He attended Eton College .

From 1776 to 1780 he was a member of the Irish House of Commons as an MP for Jamestown , County Leitrim . In 1779 he was High Sheriff of County Mayo .

When his father died in 1780, he inherited his Irish title of nobility as 3rd Earl of Altamont and thus became a member of the Irish House of Lords and left the House of Commons.

In 1785 he was accepted into the Privy Council for Ireland and in 1800 he was made Knight Companion of the Order of St. Patrick . On December 31, 1800 he was awarded the Irish title of Marquess of Sligo . On the occasion of the dissolution of the Irish Parliament, he was elected as Representative Peer to the House of Lords of the newly created United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland . On February 20, 1806, he was also given the title of Baron Monteagle , who belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and thus directly entitled to a seat in the British House of Lords.

In 1787 he had married Lady Louisa Catherine Howe, daughter of Admiral Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe . With her he had a son and heir, Howe Peter Browne, 2nd Marquess of Sligo (1788-1845).
