John William Carver (born January 16, 1965 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) is a former English football player and current coach .

Career

player

John William Carver was born in Newcastle upon Tyne . He began his career as an apprentice at Newcastle United . He signed a contract with the club in January 1983, but never rose to the league and left in 1985.

Carver then played a season at Cardiff City , playing in thirteen games, but a hamstring injury ended his career at the age of twenty. He then played as a semi-professional footballer for Gateshead from 1987 to 1990, although he worked his way up as a coach in Newcastle.

Trainer

Newcastle United, Leeds United and Luton Town

Carver was Bobby Robson's assistant coach at Newcastle United . After Robson's release in August 2004, Carver was appointed coach and led the team to a 3–0 win over the leading Blackburn Rovers . Carver later dedicated the win to Bobby Robson. Despite the victory, Carver was not viewed permanently. This position then went to Graeme Souness .

In July 2005, Leeds United appointed Carver as the first team coach to replace Adrian Boothroyd . He was part of the Kevin Blackwell and Sam Ellis management team . After Sam Ellis left in May 2006, Carver was promoted to the position of assistant coach.

Carver became an interim coach at Leeds United for the second time in his career . Carver celebrated a win in his first game against Birmingham City with the final result 3-2. Even so, Carver's management suffered a series of heavy defeats, leading to Leeds United chairman Ken Bates hiring Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet as coaches. Carver left Leeds United on October 23, 2006.

Kevin Blackwell then became the coach of Luton Town and trained Carver as his assistant with ex-Leeds coach Sam Ellis. With Luton Town came great financial difficulties. Carver, Blackwell and Ellis were fired.

Toronto FC

On February 1, 2008 Carver was the head coach of Major League Soccer of Toronto FC , along with former coach Mo Johnston as a manager and "Director of football". Paul Winsper, an old friend of Newcastle United, was hired as a strength and conditioning coach in January.

In April 2009, Carver was charged $ 750 by MLS for openly criticizing the referee's standards in their 3–2 loss to Dallas FC . He was absent from the 1-0 home win over Chivas USA and finally resigned four days later, on April 25, 2009, the day before the game against Sporting Kansas City .

Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield United

In December 2009, Carver became Paul Mariner's assistant at Plymouth Argyle . On January 14, 2010 he got a job offer as a trainer from trainer Brian Laws , but he turned it down because he wanted to give back to the others the loyalty he had got from Paul Mariner and the club.

In August 2010 Carver was appointed first team coach at Sheffield United by coach Gary Speed , who played for Newcastle United when Carver was assistant coach. That appointment led to an encounter with Sam Ellis, who was Speed's assistant. After Speed left Sheffield United to coach the Welsh national soccer team on December 14 , Carver was appointed interim coach. He left the club on December 30, 2010 after Micky Adams was appointed coach.

Return to Newcastle United

On January 18, 2011, Newcastle United announced that Carver would be the new assistant coach until the end of the season. Coach Alan Pardew said it will only be a short period of time to see how the two worked together. On February 25, he signed a 5 12 year contract with Newcastle.

On March 17, 2013, Carver was sent to the stands by the referees at halftime during a game against Wigan Athletic . This was due to his reaction to Wigan player Callum McManaman's attack on Newcastle defender Massadio Haïdara . Haidara was injured and McManaman received no penalty. Carver was cautioned with £ 1,000 and.

Because of Pardew's interest in a job at Crystal Palace FC , Carver and Steve Stone were brief coaches for two games against Burnley FC in the Premier League and Leicester City in an FA Cup defeat for Newcastle. On January 26, 2015, it was confirmed that Carver had been appointed head coach through the end of the 2014-15 season. Five days after Carver was named head coach, he won his first game against Hull City on January 31st . He had a series of eight defeats by May 2, 2015. That was a new record for Newcastle in the Premier League. Despite the big defeats, Carver still believed that he was "the best coach in the Premier League". He later said that his words were taken out of context by the media. On the last day of the season, Newcastle beat West Ham United 2-0, which gave them security in the 2015/16 Premier League . On June 9, 2015, Carver and Steve Stone terminated their contracts and announced Steve McClaren as the new head coach.
