John Gustav Weiss (also white ; born August 21, 1857 in Mannheim ; † June 4, 1943 in Eberbach ) was a German politician and historian. He was mayor of Eberbach, member of the Baden state parliament and chairman of the association of medium-sized towns in Baden .

Life

Weiss attended elementary school, the Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium and the Realgymnasium in Mannheim . Without a high school diploma, he left school and began a commercial apprenticeship. In 1875 he began studying at Heidelberg University , where he became a member of the Frankonia Heidelberg fraternity in 1875 . For the winter semester in 1877 he went to the University of Strasbourg . Without finishing his studies, he became an editor for the Rhein- und Neckar-Zeitung in Mannheim in 1878 and the Ostdeutsche Zeitung in Thorn the following year . In 1880/81 he completed his military service in Mannheim as a one year old and then obtained his doctorate from Heidelberg University. phil. Then Weiss went to Adelsheim and became a rent bureau for the Lords of Adelsheim .

In 1893 Weiss was elected mayor of Eberbach. He was only the second full-time mayor of the city, was re-elected several times and held the office until 1927. In 1895 he initiated the establishment of the Association of Medium-Sized Cities of Baden, in which he was elected chairman. When he stepped down from the presidency in 1920, the association had 70 member cities. In 1903 he was also elected to the second chamber of the Baden state parliament for the National Liberals. Two years later he moved to the first chamber when he was elected to represent the middle cities. He was a member of the state parliament until its end after the First World War . In addition, he was a member of the district assembly and the district committee from 1899 to 1919, from 1914 as chairman. At the end of his life, when Weiss no longer held any political office, he sympathized with National Socialism without becoming a member of the NSDAP .

During his tenure as mayor of Eberbach, the Neckar Bridge was built and Neckarwimmersbach was incorporated. The district hospital was built and new residential areas opened up. The city was canalized and connected to electricity. In the state parliament he stood up for the interests of the cities and took care of tax policy and the right to vote.

During his life, Weiss also devoted himself to historical research. He was part-time archivist for the Lords of Adelsheim and volunteer caretaker of the Baden Historical Commission for the districts of Adelsheim , Buchen , Eberbach and Mosbach . In 1903 he was appointed a corresponding member of the Historical Commission. He published a source-based history book by Eberbach, later also one by Weinheim . He housed the Eberbach city archive in one of the old fortification towers and rearranged it. He founded a city history collection and brought out the Eberbacher Geschichtsblatt. He had Eberbach Castle uncovered and restored in 1908.

The city of Eberbach awarded Weiss honorary citizenship in 1927 . She named a street and a school after him.
