To the work

In 1971 he wrote Camera Recording Its Own Condition (7 Apertures, 10 Speeds, 2 Mirrors) . Individual photographs that are photographed in a mirror and presented as a square hanging. The triggering camera becomes the subject of the picture . The 70 photographs always show the same image section, but were photographed with different shutter speeds , f-numbers and exposure , which resulted in divergent results.

With the work Cause of Death from 1974 Hilliard shows photographs of a body covered with a cloth, which he gives various titles. "Crushed / Broken", "Drowned / Drowned", "Burned / Verbrannt", and "Fell / Niedergestrecked". Although the photos have a documentary character, the content is changed by adding different titles. The camera can't lie, but it tells different truths.

December Water from 1976 is a triptych consisting of three photos . The photos are taken from the same point of view and have the same motif. The focus is different . The focus is placed on the foreground, middle ground or background.

In later works Hilliard works with multiple exposures and rotations of the subject. He addresses lighting and standards.
