John Hogg (naturalist)

John Hogg (born March 21, 1800 in Norton near Durham , † September 16, 1869 in County Durham ) was a British lawyer , archeologist and naturalist .

Life

John Hogg was the second of four sons of the barrister John Hogg (1761-1823) and his wife Prudentia (nee Jones, ~ 1767-1838). He also had two sisters. Barrister Thomas Jefferson Hogg was one of his brothers.

John Hogg attended Durham Grammar School . From 1818 he attended Peterhouse , the oldest college at Cambridge University . In 1822 he received his Bachelor of Arts and in 1827 a Master of Arts . In 1828 he was accepted into the Inner Temple . In 1832 he was admitted to the bar. He practiced on the Northern Circuit and was Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant in County Durham.

In addition to his legal work, Hogg dealt intensively with scientific topics. He was a respected ancient scientist and geographer , as well as a naturalist. So the taxon Protoctista goes back to Hogg. He published a number of books, including in the areas of antiquity , hagiography , archeology and philology , as well as botany , geology and geography . He was also interested in the natural history of Stockton-on-Tees and its surroundings.

In 1839 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society . He was also a Fellow of the Linnean Society , a member of the Royal Society of Literature , of which he served as Vice President in 1866, and he was a member of the Cambridge Philosophical Society , the Royal Geographical Society and the Kongelige nordiske oldskriftselskab in Copenhagen.

Hogg was married to Anne Louisa Sarah Goldfinch († 1864). The marriage resulted in a son and two daughters. He died on September 16, 1869 at his Norton House , County Durham home.
