John J. Wilkes

John Joseph Wilkes FBA FSA FSA Scot (* 1936 in Reigate ) is a British classical archeologist and emeritus Yates Professor of Classical Art and Archeology .

He studied Ancient History and Archeology at University College London , received a BA and then a Ph.D. from the University of Durham. PhD . From 1961 to 1963 he worked as a research fellow for history and archeology at the University of Birmingham . In 1963 he was appointed assistant lecturer at the University of Manchester before returning to Birmingham the following year. There he became a senior lecturer in 1971 appointed for Roman history and archeology. In 1974 he went to the Archaeological Institute of the University of London as Professor of Provincial Roman Archeology . In 1992 he was appointed to the professorship for Classical Archeology at the same university, where he held the title of Yates Professor , even if the corresponding chair has already been abolished. In 2001 he retired .

His research extends to various areas of the Roman Empire , but her focus is on the area of ​​the former Yugoslavia and the Danube provinces . He has also carried out excavations on Hadrian's Wall and Antonine Wall and, together with Sheppard Frere, directed a major excavation at Strageath Fort in Perthshire from 1973 to 1986/1989 .

Wilkes is a Fellow of the British Academy , the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland . He is Honorary President of the Association for Roman Archeology and Honorary Vice President of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies . From 1980 to 1984 he published their scientific journal Britannia . From 1979 to 1983 he was chairman of the archeology, history and literature department of the British School at Rome .
