John Lancaster Spalding (born June 2, 1840 in Lebanon , Kentucky , United States , † August 25, 1916 ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Peoria .

Life

John Lancaster Spalding, elder of nine siblings, studied at the American College in Leuven , where he received the sacrament of ordination for the Diocese of Louisville on December 19, 1863 . In 1866 he was the youngest participant in the Second National Council in Baltimore , where he also appeared as a preacher. At the time, his uncle Martin John Spalding was Archbishop of Baltimore . Following his example, he campaigned for the establishment of the Catholic University of America from 1871 .

Pope Pius IX appointed him on December 19, 1876 first Bishop of Peoria . The Archbishop of New York , Cardinal John McCloskey , ordained him episcopal on May 1 of the following year ; Co- consecrators were James Gibbons , Bishop of Richmond , and Thomas Patrick Roger Foley , Coadjutor Bishop of Chicago . Foley also took office three weeks later at St. Mary's Church in Peoria .

During his tenure he was committed to founding Catholic schools and supported the establishment of native-speaking parishes for all immigrant groups. In 1884 he attended the Third National Council in Baltimore. He then participated in the preparation of the Baltimore National Catechism . As an author, he published, among other things, a biography of his uncle Martin John Spalding. He brought out works on poetry under the pseudonym Henry Hamilton .

Limited ability to work due to a stroke he suffered in 1905, he renounced the diocese of Peoria. With the acceptance of the resignation on October 14, 1908 Pope named him Pius X to Titular Archbishop of Scythopolis .
