John Carson Lennox (* 7. November 1943 in Northern Ireland ) is an emeritus professor of mathematics University of Oxford .

Life

Lennox studied at Emmanuel College , Cambridge . There he heard, among other things, the last lecture by CS Lewis on the poet John Donne . In 1970, Lennox was awarded a doctorate by Cambridge University for his dissertation Centrality and Permutability in Soluble Groups .

Lennox then taught mathematics at the University of Wales at Cardiff for 29 years . During this time he spent research stays at the universities of Würzburg , Freiburg (as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation ) and Vienna . He has also given guest lectures in mathematics and biblical interpretation in Europe and North America . In addition to his scientific publication activities, he translated the works of Russian mathematicians.

Today Lennox teaches at the University of Oxford and is particularly concerned with determining the relationship between science and religion. He has become known to the non-university public as an author and speaker on this subject.

Positions

Lennox (left) discusses with Christopher Hitchens in Alabama

Lennox particularly intervened in the scientific discussion from his decidedly Christian point of view. So he faced public debate with people who doubt or exclude the existence of God or God's intervention in the world, such as Richard Dawkins , British evolutionary biologist, Christopher Hitchens , British-American author and journalist, and Michael Shermer , American Science journalist, and Peter Singer , Australian philosopher and bioethicist.

John Lennox represents the theory of intelligent design in a moderate form , but describes creationist currents (as a result of strictly literal interpretation of the Bible) as "literalistic".

Private

Lennox speaks English, Russian, French and German. He is married to Sally Lennox, has three children and five grandchildren and lives in the countryside near Oxford.
