John M. Rosenfield

John Max Rosenfield (also John Rosenfield III ; born October 9, 1924 in Dallas , Texas , † December 16, 2013 ) was an American art historian and East Asian scholar at Harvard University . He was regarded as an expert on Japanese art and as the nestor of the scientific examination of Japanese art in the United States after the Second World War.

Life

Rosenfeld was the son of Max John Rosenfield, Jr. , a noted columnist and cultural critic. He studied at the University of Texas at Austin before serving with the US Army in East Asia and Southeast Asia during World War II and the Korean War . During and after his military service, he studied Thai and Oriental Studies at the University of California, Berkeley , and Art (each with a Bachelor's degree) at Southern Methodist University . He obtained a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Iowa in 1949 and a Ph.D. from Benjamin Rowland at Harvard University in 1959 with a thesis on Buddhist art of Kushana. in art history.

After teaching positions at the University of Iowa and the University of California, Los Angeles , Rosenfield was a professor at Harvard University from 1965. Here he was Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Professor of East Asian Art from 1971 and most recently served as holder of the chair for fine arts and as director of the Harvard University Art Museum . He has served on the governing bodies of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston , and the Japan Society of New York and the Metropolitan Center for Far Eastern Art Studies in Kyoto . In 1991 Rosenfield retired, but continued to work primarily as a writer and lecturer.

In 1971 Rosenfield was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1972 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . In 1988 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun for his efforts to promote Japanese-American relations . In 1986 he received the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award from the Asian Cultural Council , in 2001 the Yamagata Banto Prize and in 2012 the Charles Lang Freer Medal from the Smithsonian Institution .

John M. Rosenfield was married to Ella Ruth Hopper († 2011), the couple had two children.
