John McEnery trained as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School founded by Laurence Olivier in Bristol. From 1966 he played for the Royal National Theater , where he quickly got bigger roles. In the 1970s he played with the Royal Shakespeare Company , from the 1990s on several times at the Globe Theater . Critics attested McEnery, who embodied above all funny Shakespeare roles, great talent, but he was also considered a rebel and eccentric, who put little ambition in the formation of a career and therefore possibly never became a big star.

McEnery became known on the big screen as Mercutio in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet , which earned him a nomination for the BAFTA Award . In 1990 he played Osric in Hamlet (1990) again under Zeffirelli's direction . Anthony Friedmann made him the star of his Herman Melville adaptation Bartleby in 1970 . In the following years he also worked in France: In Anatole Litvak's thriller La Dame dans l'auto avec des lunettes et un fusil he uses Samantha Eggar as a hitchhiker , in Gérard Brach's triangular drama Le bateau sur l'herbe he is directed by Claude Jade for one Intrigue exploited against her lover Jean-Pierre Cassel . In Brach's film there are reminiscences of his Shakespeare roles, for example he plays Hamlet's monologue, quotes other Shakespeare characters and, as an Anglo-Saxon duet with Claude Jade, belts out "God Save The Queen". He also had other film roles in Italy ( Days of Fury ). The science fiction prehistoric adventure Caprona - The Forgotten Land (1975) became a cult film . In the 1990s, McEnery was mainly active in TV sets (including Abraham , Merlin ). He played Bean's father Joe Muir alongside Sean Bean in Every Saturday .

From 1973 to 1979 he was married to actress Stephanie Beacham . His older brother Peter McEnery is also an actor. John McEnery died in his sleep in April 2019 at the age of 75.
