John Francis Moore SMA (born January 12, 1942 in Dublin , Ireland ; † January 20, 2010 there ) was Bishop of Bauchi .

Life

John Francis Moore joined the Society of Africa Missions (SMA) religious order in Cloughballymore, County Galway , in 1959 and made profession in 1960 . From 1960 to 1966 he studied philosophy and theology at the religious seminary in Dromantine, Newry . He took his religious vows on June 15, 1965 and was ordained a priest on December 20, 1965 by Bishop Eugene Doherty at St. Colman's Cathedral, Newry.

He then became a missionary in the Archdiocese of Jos in northern Nigeria . He learned the local languages ​​and worked in Akwanga, Kwa, Shendam, Kafanchan, Kwande, Pankshin and Jos. He was particularly committed to building a medical and school infrastructure. Moore was involved in the establishment of the dioceses of Kafanchan, Shendam and Bauchi. John Francis Moore, who was fluent in Hausa and other Nigerian dialects, tried hard to communicate with the local Muslims .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Gigthi in 1996 and appointed him Apostolic Vicar of the Vicariate of Bauchi, which was founded out of the Archdiocese of Jos . He received his episcopal consecration on November 7, 1996, the Archbishop of Jos, Gabriel Gonsum Ganaka ; Co- consecrators were Ignatius Ayau Kaigama , Archbishop of Jalingo, and Joseph Danlami Bagobiri , Bishop of Kafanchan. With the elevation of the vicariate to the diocese, he was appointed bishop of the Bauchi diocese.

He died unexpectedly at St. Vincent's Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin, where he was undergoing medical examinations.
