John Perumattam

John Perumattam MSTA (born November 3, 1921 in Kakkoor , † June 18, 2011 in Ujjain ) was an Indian clergyman . He was the Syro-Malabar bishop of Ujjain .

Life

John Perumattam was born into a Syro-Malabar family in Kakkoor. His younger brother also became a priest , and one of his three sisters became a nun. After finishing school in 1942 he attended the St. Thomas minor seminary in Chaganachery from June . On March 11, 1951, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Sebastian Vayalil . After six months in Kerala , he was sent to Rome to study there. There he received a doctorate in canon and civil law from the Pontifical Lateran University and returned to Kerala in 1956. Perumattam was now active in the diocese of Palai , including in 1968 he was rector of the Good Shepherd Minor Seminary . After twelve years in the state of Kerala, Perumattam went to the districts of Ujjain , Shajapur and Rajgarh in 1968 to do missionary work there. When the Missionary Society of St. Thomas the Apostle (MST) was founded that same year , Perumattam became its first general director.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 29, 1968 Apostolic Exarch of Ujjain. With the elevation of the exarchate to the diocese on February 26, 1977 he became the first bishop of Ujjain. The Bishop of Palai , Sebastian Vayalil, donated him episcopal ordination on May 15 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Eugene Louis D'Souza MSFS , Archbishop of Bhopal , and George M. Anathil SVD , Bishop of Indore . One of his most important projects as a bishop was the establishment of the Kripa Social Welfare society .

On April 4, 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
