John W. Mitchell

John William Mitchell , MBE (born June 14, 1917 in Wakefield , Yorkshire , England , † November 21, 2005 in Cheltenham , Gloucestershire , England) was a British sound engineer .

Life

Mitchell began his career in the mid-1930s. Until the mid-1940s he mostly worked as a sound assistant , usually without naming his name in the credits. In 1946 he worked for the first time on a film directed by David Lean , Mysterious Inheritance . This was later followed by The Bridge on the Kwai (1957) and Journey to India (1984), one of Mitchell's last films before he retired from the film business.

Mitchell film productions was involved in numerous major UK, including five films from the James Bond series and the Agatha Christie - literary adaptations Death on the Nile , Murder in the mirror and Evil Under the Sun . In 1972 he was nominated for the Oscar in the category Best Sound for the first time for James Bond 007 - Diamond Fever . In 1975 there was a nomination for the BAFTA Film Award in the category Best Sound for Peter Hunt's adventure film Gold . Mitchell received his second and final Oscar nomination in 1985 for a trip to India .

After 166 films, he retired from the film business in 1986, but appeared one last time as a consultant on the short film The Dance of Shiva with Kenneth Branagh and Julian Glover in 1998 . He died in 2005 at the age of 88.
