Jon T. Sumida

Jon Tetsuro Sumida (born July 7, 1949 in Washington, DC ) is an American modern historian specializing in naval history and military strategy . He is currently a professor at the University of Maryland .

Life

Sumida is of Japanese descent . He studied European history from 1967 to 1971 at Stevenson College, University of California, Santa Cruz ( Bachelor of Arts ) and from 1972 to 1974 Modern British History at the University of Chicago ( Master of Arts ) in Chicago , Illinois . In 1982 he earned a Ph.D. in Modern British History from the University of Chicago. He also taught part-time at Chicago-based Roosevelt University (1980). From 1980 to 1982 he was a lecturer , from 1982 to 1988 Assistant Professor and from 1988 Associate Professor at the University of Maryland in College Park , Maryland . He still works at the Department of History to this day .

He was visiting professor at the Department of Military Strategy and Operations of the National War College (2000) at Fort Lesley J. McNair , Washington, DC , program director of the annual meeting of the Society for Military History (2004), member (2000–2002) or director of the Department of the Army Historical Advisory Committee (2003-2006) and Major General Matthew C. Horner Chair of Military Theory at Marine Corps University (2004-2006) in Quantico , Virginia , where he was visiting professor at the School of Advanced Warfighting (SAW) is.

He served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Military History and is a member of the Society for Military History , the International Naval Research Organization , the US Naval Institute, and the American Historical Association .

Sumida has been married since 1975 and has two daughters.

He is the author of several military strategy and marine history (UK) books as well as over 30 articles and around 50 reviews. For the standard work Encyclopedia of Military Science he wrote the entries on Carl von Clausewitz and Alfred Thayer Mahan . Some of his works have won awards and been selected for the US Marine Corps Professional Reading Program .

In 2002 he debated the interpretation of Clausewitz with Clifford J. Rogers in the Journal of Military History .

Awards

Sumida has received several awards. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars , the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and Churchill College at the University of Cambridge .
