Portrait epitaph for Jonas Nicolai in Lübeck Cathedral

Jonas Nicolai (* 1579 in Kölzow, today part of Dettmannsdorf ; † November 7, 1646 in Lübeck ) was a German Evangelical-Lutheran theologian and most recently pastor at Lübeck Cathedral .

Life

Jonas Nicolai was the son of the pastor of the Kölzow village church, Bernhard Nikolai. He went to school in Ampfurth and studied from 1599 at the Universities of Rostock and Wittenberg University . In April 1603 he obtained his master's degree in Rostock.

He was first rector of the school in Ampfurth. In 1606 the von Alvensleben appointed him pastor in Kalbe (Milde) as the holder of the church patronage . From there in 1626 he went to the Holy Spirit Church in Magdeburg as a pastor, which was burned down when the imperial troops under Tilly stormed Magdeburg on May 10, 1631 (May 20 according to the Gregorian calendar). As a refugee, Nicolai came to Hamburg via Osterwieck , Wolfenbüttel , Braunschweig and Lüneburg . In 1632 he was appointed (main) pastor at Lübeck Cathedral, where he stayed until his death. On March 6, 1645 he suffered a stroke on the pulpit of St. Mary's Church during a catechism sermon that the pastors of the main churches held alternately in St. Mary , from which he did not recover.

His portrait epitaph has been preserved and hangs in the south aisle of Lübeck Cathedral.
