Jorge José Emiliano dos Santos

Jorge José Emiliano dos Santos (born March 19, 1954 in Rio de Janeiro , † February 21, 1995 ibid), called Margarida , was a Brazilian football referee .

Dos Santos began as a referee at beach soccer between amateur clubs on the beach in Rio de Janeiro, where things are not always squeamish. There he got his nickname Margarida ( Margarete or daisies ). From 1988 he whistled in the top division, he made his debut in the game Flamengo Rio de Janeiro against Volta Redonda FC at the Estádio da Gávea in Rio. In the same year he had his media coming-out and was the first openly gay top referee in Brazil. The directors of the CR Vasco da Gama didn't really know how to deal with it, but the press praised his performance. In 1989, at the start of the 6th Brazilian Women's Soccer Cup at the Estádio Caio Martins , an incident occurred: after a player had insulted him, he lost his temper and dealt her a blow. There was a commotion and he was forced to flee from the angry players. A few days later, he apologized to the player with a flower.

In addition to his performance, he became a kind of star through his theatrical-dance style with which he moved on the field. After a team scored a goal, he danced backwards to the center circle and when a player committed a foul he uttered small delighted screams. The players respected him. He used to say to them, I may be a pansy (gay) off the football field, but I'm a macho here .

Dos Santos died on February 21, 1995 of complications from AIDS .

Emiliano Dos Santos is one of several role models from which the referee Clésio Moreira dos Santos created a fictional character who also took his nickname Margarida . He later wore a pink camisole and can be seen in a well-known YouTube video.
