José D'Elía

José Artigas D'Elía Correa (born June 21, 1916 in Treinta y Tres Department , † January 29, 2007 ) was a Uruguayan politician and trade unionist.

José D'Elía was born to Germán D'Elía and Elisa Leonor Correa. Just a few weeks after his birth, the family first moved to Rocha before settling in Montevideo in 1928 . There D'Elía completed his school education and studied at the Universidad del Trabajo . In 1934 he joined the Partido Socialista del Uruguay . There he founded the youth organization of the party with the Juventud Socialista del Uruguay (JSU) and from then on had membership number 1. In 1936 he was an active member of the National Committee for the Defense of the Spanish Republic . On June 17, 1941, he married Delma Bauzá. On March 20, 1942, he took part in the constituent congress of the Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT) and was appointed its "Pro-Secretario". In January of the following year, however, he left the UGT again because of differences of opinion about how to deal with a strike in the port of Montevideo . In 1945 he took part in the 27th Conference of the International Labor Organization . In 1948 he turned away from the Partido Socialista and founded the Agrupación Socialista Obrera (ASO) together with Ruben Castillos, Gerardo Cuesta, Miltón Schinca and Pedro Toledo on August 18, 1948 . In 1953 he lost his job at ABBOT due to his union activities and from then on worked first for Fármaca Uruguaya and later for Laboratorios Greco. He was then chairman of the founding commission of the Central de Trabajadores del Uruguay (CTU), was involved in the founding process of the Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (CNT) and eventually became its president. D'Elía also belonged to the leadership of the Federación Uruguaya de Empleados del Comercio y la Industria (FUECI) for around 30 years , which he had already joined in 1940. He was arrested in June 1969 and was temporarily incarcerated in San Ramón Prison. In 1971 he supported the establishment of the Frente Amplio . About two years later he took part in the general strike in the wake of the coup . After the CNT was disbanded, he continued to work underground. However, D'Elía was immediately arrested. In the course of this arrest, his passport was withdrawn. Although he was not imprisoned, he was under constant government supervision in Shangrilá . He was one of the early 1980s, the Comisión Nacional de Derechos Sindicales and dealt with the trade union reorganization. In 1984 he was then a candidate of the Frente Amplio for the office of Vice President. Since 1993 D'Elía has held the honorary presidency of the PIT-CNT . In 2005 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Universidad de la República . D'Elía had two daughters and seven grandchildren.
