José Daniel Gil Zuñiga

José Daniel Gil Zuñiga (born June 29, 1955 in Puerto Armuelles , Panama ) is a Costa Rican historian , social scientist and professor at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (UNA) in Heredia . His research interests are the mentality and social history of Costa Rica, in particular the history of marginalized social groups as well as the history of regional and local identities as well as the Costa Rican national identity.

Origin and academic career

Gil received his primary school education in Puerto Armuelles, a small port town on the Pacific coast of Panama, which at the time was characterized by the banana cultivation of the United Fruit Company . He graduated from school in Golfito , Province of Puntarenas , Costa Rica.

In 1974 he began studying history at the UNA's Escuela de Historia. In 1982 he completed his studies with the degree of Licenciado on "El culto a la Virgen de los Ángeles, 1824-1935. Una aproximación a la mentalidad religiosa". He then completed a degree abroad at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona in Barcelona / Spain . At the same time, he worked as a lecturer at the Escuela de Historia. In 1994 he completed his dissertation “Homicidio, Asociación y Conflicto en la provincia de Heredia 1880-1915” and was then appointed university professor. In addition to his teaching activities, he held various academic positions at the Escuela.

Inspired by the research of the French historian Michel Vovelle Gil became a pioneer of the history of mentality in Costa Rica, breaking the hitherto prevailing national history on. His research interests therefore also include local history ( Spanish : Historia local ), the history of marginalized social groups, crime , cultural history and, more recently, the history of tourism . He is one of the initiators of CLAVES, a foundation for the promotion of local and cultural historical studies. To popularize the science of history, he produced, often together with students, a good 200 radio programs ( Espacio Abierto ) and set up history workshops ( Talleres de Historia de Costa Rica ) , also in collaboration with students .

International activity

Gil organized a series of conferences with historians and social scientists from neighboring Central American countries, Spain and France , such as the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua , Managua , the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Francisco Morazán , Tegucigalpa / Honduras , the Universidad de Panamá , the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela , the École pratique des hautes études and universities in Guatemala and El Salvador .
