José Manuel Mourinho Félix (born February 12, 1938 in Ferragudo , † June 25, 2017 in Setúbal ), also known as Félix Mourinho , was a Portuguese football goalkeeper and coach. He is the father of the football coach José Mourinho .

Player career

Mourinho was born in Ferragudo in the Faro district in the Algarve region. He played a total of 19 seasons as a professional footballer and made his debut in the Primeira Liga for Vitória Setúbal as a goalkeeper in 1955/56 . He spent 13 seasons at Setúbal, helping them win the Portuguese Cup ( Taça de Portugal ) twice in 1965 and 1967, thus reaching the Exhibition Cities Cup .

Before the beginning of 1968/69 Mourinho signed with Belenenses Lisbon , where he reached the best league placement of his career in 1973 in his fifth season with second place in the Primeira Liga , followed by qualification for the UEFA Cup . In June of the following year, he ended his playing career at the age of 36.

On June 25, 1972, he played his only international match for the Portuguese national team when he came on in the final minutes of a 2-1 win against Ireland for Benfica's José Henrique .

Coaching career

Mourinho began his coaching career in 1976 (he had previously worked as an assistant at Belenenses while he was still an active player). His first stay in the Primeira Liga was in 1980/81 with Amora FC , which he had led to the championship in the second division the previous year. However, he left the team in the middle of the season and went to Rio Ave FC in the Segunda League . Here he could reach the ascent again.

Mourinho's only full major seasons were 1981/82 and 1983/84 , where he led Rio Ave to fifth place and into the domestic cup final. In the 1981/82 season he coached his own son José, who was then playing for Rio Ave. Mourinho rarely picked his son, but wanted to use him on the final day of the season against already established champions Sporting Lisbon after a regular player injured himself while warming up. The then president of the association José Maria Pinho forbade the use, however, because he feared nepotism . After the incident, the Mourinhos left the club to join Belenenses the following summer. Before that, Mourinho was considered for the job of national coach of Portugal, which Fernando Cabrita received. Mourinho returned to Rio Ave in 1983 but was released on Christmas Day 1984. He then coached various lower-class clubs and ended his coaching career in 1996 at Vitória Setúbal, where he had once started his playing career.

Personal

Mourinho married Maria Júlia Carrajola dos Santos (born 1939) and had two children, Teresa (born 1960) and José (born 1963). The latter became one of the most renowned and successful soccer coaches of his time.

Mourinho died on June 25, 2017 in Setúbal at the age of 79.
