José María Gil Tamayo (born June 5, 1957 in Zalamea de la Serena , Badajoz Province , Spain ) is a Spanish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Ávila .

Life

José María Gil Tamayo studied Philosophy and Catholic Theology at the Seminary of the Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz and at the University of Navarra . He received on 7 September 1980, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Gil Tamayo then worked as a pastor in various rural parishes for nine years before graduating from the University of Navarra with a degree in information science . In 1992 he became head of the press office of the Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz. From 1998 to 2011 Gil Tamayo was Director of the Secretariat of the Commission for Social Communications of the Spanish Bishops' Conference . José María Gil Tamayo became General Secretary of the Spanish Bishops' Conference on November 20, 2013.

On November 6, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Ávila. The Archbishop of Valladolid , Ricardo Cardinal Blázquez , donated him episcopal ordination on December 15 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Renzo Fratini , and the Bishop Emeritus of Ávila, Jesús García Burillo .
