José Ramón Gurruchaga Ezama

José Ramón Gurruchaga Ezama SDB (born March 29, 1931 in Baracaldo ; † April 11, 2017 in Lima ) was a Spanish religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Lurín in Peru .

Life

Born in Spain, José Ramón Gurruchaga Ezama joined the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and was sent to Peru by his order in 1951. After studying in Rome , he was ordained a priest on February 11, 1961 . He was a teacher at the seminary and head of a vocational school of his order, then pastor of the Magdalena del Mar parish in Lima.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Huaraz on January 3, 1987 . The Apostolic Nuncio in Peru, Archbishop Luigi Dossena , donated him episcopal ordination on February 28 of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Manuel Prado Pérez-Rosas SJ , Archbishop of Trujillo , and Emilio Vallebuona Merea SDB, Archbishop of Huancayo .

On December 14, 1996, he was appointed by John Paul II as the first bishop of the Lurín diocese in the south of Lima, which was established on the same date . The inauguration took place on January 15 of the following year.

On June 17, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement. Gurruchaga died in Lima in 2017 at the age of 86 after a long illness.
