Josef Eichberger ( November 26, 1801 in Zbiroh , Bohemia - March 5, 1862 in Bremen ) was a German opera singer ( soprano , bass , tenor ) and opera director as well as theater director and vocal teacher .

Life

After Eichberger, who originally started to study philosophy in Prague, but then had to study singing because of his voice, he found employment as a church singer and at the age of 19 joined the Prague State Theater as a chorus. There a peculiar change took place in his voice. Before he was a soprano, his voice suddenly mutated into a bass and only with sustained effort did he get a high, powerful tenor voice.

After singing in the choir and in smaller opera roles in Prague for a short time (debut: September 17, 1823 as “Don Octavio”), he went to Vienna and received larger roles there.

From there he moved to the Pest theater under the management of Anton Babnigg , who also trained him, sang in Ofen from 1825 to 1826 and then took part in the kk Hoftheater at the Carinthian Thor in Vienna under Louis Duport from 1826 to 1829 .

This was followed by positions in Kassel (1829), where he took acting lessons, Cologne (1831-1832) and Aachen. At this time he already had a good reputation as a tenor player in heroic and sometimes also in sentimental roles. After returning from Paris, where he made a guest appearance with the Deutsche Oper and successfully performed alongside Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient , he received an application from Florian Ringelhart to Leipzig. There he worked until 1835. In that year he went to the Hofbühne Berlin for spontaneous games.

Ousted more and more by Eduard Mantius' growing importance, Eichberger swapped Berlin for Mainz, made a guest appearance in London in 1841, performed in Bamberg and Meiningen from 1842 to 1843 and took over the stage management of the first-named city the following year. From 1844 to 1847 he was in Königsberg and then went to Riga.

In Riga, he also ended his stage career in September 1848 on the occasion of his 25th anniversary and only performed occasionally in concerts, but continued to work as a singing teacher in Riga until 1852, then in Königsberg , Tilsit and Danzig. Finally he retired to Bremen, where he died in 1862.

From his repertoire the following should be mentioned: "Licinius", "Diavolo", "Nadori", "Hüon", "Masaniello", "Joh. of Paris "," Othello "," Cortez "," Max "," Almaviva "," Robert "," Adolar "," Zampa "," Murney "and" Cleomenes ".

His children were the opera singers Wilhelm Eichberger , Josef Eichberger junior and Livia Eichberger (1837–1931), who was married to the theater actor Caesar Galster . His grandson Max Eichberger , the son of Wilhelm, was also an opera singer.
