Josef Freitag (born September 2, 1950 in Everswinkel ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian , clergyman and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1969 at Paulinum Gymnasium (Münster) , he studied as a scholarship holder (1971–1977) from the German National Academic Foundation at the University of Münster (1969/1970), at the Gregoriana (1970–1977) at the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe (1970–1977) and at the Faculté de Théologie Catholique of the Université de Strasbourg II (1973/1974). He obtained a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the Gregorian in 1972 , in 1975 in theology and in 1977 a licentiate in dogmatic theology. After being ordained a priest on October 10, 1976 in Rome , he was chaplain at St. Johannes (Oelde) from 1977 to 1981 and sub-director and prefect of studies at the Collegium Borromaeum Münster from 1981 to 1984 . From 1985 to 1995 he was assistant to Gisbert Greshake at the chair for dogmatics and ecumenical theology at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität .

After receiving his doctorate in 1989 and habilitation in 1994 for dogmatics and ecumenical theology by the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg, he was appointed professor of the theological faculty in Fulda on October 1, 1995 as head of the Catholic theological seminar at the Philipps University of Marburg . On September 1, 2000 he became professor for dogmatics at the theological faculty in Erfurt. On January 1, 2003, he was appointed Professor of Dogmatics at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Erfurt . From 2008 to 2011 he was Dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Erfurt. In 2016 he retired .

Since 2016 he has been spiritual in the St. Lambert Study House in Lantershofen .

His research interests are ecclesiology, especially questions of catholicity and ministry; Ecumenism; Pneumatology and contextuality and catholicity (universality) of theology.
