Josef Häusler

Josef Häusler (born June 15, 1926 in Freiburg , † February 20, 2010 there ) was a German music journalist and radio editor .

Life

After graduating as a music teacher at the Freiburg University of Music , Häusler worked as a pianist and private music teacher, then as a freelance music critic for the Badisches Tagblatt and other daily newspapers as well as for the specialist press.

In 1959 he came to what was then Südwestfunk (SWF, today SWR) as a dramaturge and editor , where he was the third post-war festival director to take on the artistic and organizational management of the Donaueschinger Musiktage from Otto Tomek and to shape the program between 1975 and 1991. Gerhard R. Koch characterizes: “But the father figure Strobel also continued to play a role: not least in the vicinity of France (Messiaen, Boulez, Xenakis), but also Stockhausen and Kagel. Some taboos were also retained: Henze, for example; while Häusler succeeded in getting Luigi Nono back to Donaueschingen. Häusler approached American music with reservations, and the socialist states, with the exception of Poland, were hardly represented, as was the music of other continents. It was an 'occidental' avant-garde. "

From Häusler's writings, the two books on the history of music of the 20th century take a high rank, as they not only offer a chronicle and portraits of the most influential composers, but have also clarified stylistic and theoretical concepts through the sharply defined characterizations. There were also articles in the magazines Melos, Musica and the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik . His translations of source texts from French - primarily by Pierre Boulez - have contributed greatly to the knowledge and appreciation of French thought and aesthetics.
